Herpes are itchy and painful cold sores. If you are experiencing a herpes outbreak in the different parts of your face and body, here are some suggestions of home remedies that you can use to relieve the itching and pain, as well as to hasten the healing process. Before going any further, note that if after several days of using home remedies the sores are still painful and not showing any signs of improvement, it is imperative to consult with a doctor to avoid worsening your condition.

Topical Remedies

1. Black Tea Bags

For this herpes home remedy, all that’s required is Black Tea leaf. This contains tannins, which have antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Simply put the powder or leaf on the affected area. Additionally, you can also add hot water to the Black Tea leaf, let it cool for 5 minutes and then place the teabag on the sores. Do this twice everyday to relieve the pain.

2. Ice Pack

Because ice can numb the cold sore, it is helpful in soothing the pain. The low temperature also prevents the virus from proliferating in the affected areas. To use an ice pack, wrap it in a thin towel and place directly on the sores. Let it stay for 5 to 10 minutes or for as long as you can bear the coldness.

3. Baking Soda

Also called bi-carbonate soda, baking soda has so many benefits. Among these would be as treatment for a herpes infection. What it does is to relieve the itching and dry out the sores. To apply, simply dampen a cotton ball and coat it with baking soda. Then, apply to the affected area and leave it there. Make sure not to reuse the cotton balls to prevent contamination.

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera can soothe itching and also has fast healing properties. Moreover, it prevents scabbing and scarring. To prepare, just get a fresh Aloe Vera leaf and cut it into chunks. After cutting, chill the chunks for an hour and then apply the gel onto the affected areas.

For Sensitive Areas Affected by Herpes

While herpes commonly affects the face, particularly along the lips, it can also affect other areas such as those “below the waist.” To treat the sores, you can prepare an Epsom salt bath. It can help relieve the pain and itchiness. Just add about 8 tablespoons of Epsom salt into a tub filled with warm water. Try to mix them, and then bathe in it for about 20 minutes. Do this once or twice a day until the symptoms of herpes go away.
