Little did we know about this disease that we didn’t know it has two types and they were HSV-1 and HSV-2 consequently. The first type is called HSV-1 or Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 and the other one is Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 or simply HSV-2. These infamous infections have plagued millions of individuals around the world and majority of the victims according to statistics came from the United States.

Which is which?

Both types of HSV’s can cause genital infections but majority of the cases can be attributed to the type 2 HSV, why? It was never known. To understand each type better, a simple dissection would prove helpful.

A type of herpes that is highly similar to its cousin HSV-2. This type is the culprit behind oral herpes commonly known as cold sores or fever blisters. Although reports show that this type also causes genital herpes similar to type 2, it is very rare.

Symptoms of HSV-1 Infection (Cold Sores)

Here are some of the most prevalent symptoms affiliated to the disease:

No symptom – it is somewhat strange but yes, having no symptom when it comes to herpes infection is very common because of the virus’ latency. In other words this infection can be often times asymptomatic.
Lip ulcers
Corneal ulcers
Mouth ulcers
Conjunctival ulcers and the rarest of them all,
Genital ulcers

Take note that oral herpes caused by HSV-1 does not concentrate on the mouth only. You will find blister on your corneas and yet it can be traced back to cold sores.

Otherwise known as genital herpes, is the perpetrator for an infection estimated to reach a soaring 45 million people in the United States alone. Despite its characteristic to infect the genitals, this type also is capable of infecting the mouth.

Symptoms of HSV-2 Infection

Though similar to the former in some of their characteristics, type 2 HSV has different symptoms, these includes:

Pain in the nerves
Lower abdominal pain
Abnormal urinary discharges

Take note that these symptoms cannot be felt right after exposure to the virus. It may take weeks up to years for these symptoms to come out. It is also normal to have only a few patients coming to a clinician soliciting some treatment because this infection might not have any symptom at all. It is due to the latency characteristic of this virus.

Coming Out of the Dark

Basing on the estimated statistics of infected persons, it amounts to an alarming one is to four ratios for the American people. It still does not include victims from outside America and if by chance that all the infected persons could be accounted for, it would certainly reach a very alarming number. Before you yourself can come in contact or even spread the virus, all you have to do is to help stop the spread of the infection. Be brave and be bold, come out of the dark and help eliminate the spread of genital herpes once and for all.
